A year and a half later and the Steam Deck’s trackpads are finally being copied in a new handheld PC-

It’s taken nearly a year and a half but finally another handheld gaming PC is launching with a pair of trackpads like the Steam Deck. The Ayaneo Kun is the latest to hit Indiegogo with an official launch set for the end of August, and comes sporting the near ubiquitous Ryzen 7 7840U APU.

Those trackpads have been the only things setting Valve’s handheld apart from the raft of AMD-powered devices that have followed it, aside from maybe the somewhat intangible benefits of SteamOS. But those twin pads, set below the thumbsticks, are aiming to provide mouse-like functionality for the benefit of your very PC games.

The original Steam Deck trackpads were built from the ruins of the old Steam Controller. While I am still and forever more not sold on just how effective they are for …

AMD announces refreshed Ryzen 8040 ‘Hawk Point’ mobile chips and the excitement is, well, not particularly exciting-

After months of speculation and the odd leak, AMD has finally announced the first models in its new lineup of processors to feature the Ryzen 8000 branding at its Advancing AI event in San Jose, California. Specifically, a raft of new mobile chips under the codename “Hawk Point” were unveiled, although those of you expecting something particularly exciting may be left wanting.

These new chips will still use the same Zen 4 CPU cores and RDNA 3 GPU architecture as the previous generation, but AMD says the new Ryzen 8040 processors can deliver up to a 1.4X increase in AI workloads compared to the previous Phoenix 7040 series thanks to an updated on-die dedicated accelerator AMD refers to as the Neural Processing Unit, or NPU. Otherwise the core counts and frequencies remain mostly t…

Men of War 2 will now deliver men and war too in 2024-

An RTS with an all-timer of a name, the original Men of War launched in 2009 and was very decent indeed (with a standalone expansion, Assault Squad, we rated highly). But those men just didn’t get enough war the first time around: The sequel Men of War 2 has been in development for several years at Best Way, and was supposed to release this month.

But today Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing announced a delay until 2024 “to ensure fans receive the bug-free experience they deserve”. Which may just be a fancy way of saying everyone’s playing Starfield, but it comes after public playtests that have been running for most of the year and what the developer calls “issues found in the final rounds of internal testing.”

Another problem is that Best Way is a Ukrainian studio, and…

League of Legends is getting a Vampire Survivors-style PvE mode later this year-

Bullet heaven games are essentially the reverse of bullet hells: Instead of trying to dodge endless, nigh-impenetrable waves of enemy projectiles, you are the source of those projectiles, using them to mow down endless, nigh-impenetrable waves of enemies. I’m pretty sure Vampire Survivors wasn’t the first game of the type, but it was definitely the one that dragged it to prominence, inspiring all sorts of imitators—including, later this year, a new game mode in League of Legends.

“After months of work, it’s time to let you all know that we are currently working on our first bullet heaven survivor PvE game mode,” League of Legends developer Selina Liu said in an update video posted today. The new mode, she said, will be “a little different take on League’s core gameplay, but …

One of the coolest upcoming city builders now has a free demo on Steam, and you should try it-

Laysara: Summit Kingdom”

I’ve almost lost count of all the interesting-looking city builders coming in 2023: medieval strategy Manor Lords, urban city builder Cities: Skylines 2, and dark fantasy colony sim Gord are all due out later this year—and maybe (hopefully?) societal city builder Frostpunk 2 will join them too, though we haven’t gotten official word on that yet.

Then there’s Laysara: Summit Kingdom, which is maybe the most interesting of the bunch because it just looks so cool. The city builder has an exceedingly neat twist: you’re building your city on the steep cliffs of a mountaintop rising out of the clouds. Along with hazards like avalanches that can bury your town Read more

One of Destiny 2’s legendary weapons was doing 40% extra damage for weeks and nobody noticed-

So, this is a weird one. Tucked away near the bottom of today’s Destiny 2 weapon changes preview is a note about scout rifles. It reads: “Long Arm was inadvertently receiving the damage bonus vs minors for Exotics, so we’ve addressed that.” Doesn’t sound like a big deal unless you’re familiar with the nitty gritty of Destiny 2 damage values, but the upshot is that Long Arm was getting a free 40% bonus against all rank and file enemies in the game, which should have made it an easy meta pick in hard activities where even minor mobs have thick health bars.

[Update: I asked Bungie how long the bug has been in place, and they told me it’s been there since the start of Season 19, which means December 9 when the gun became available as part of the Spire of the Watcher loot table.…

As the games industry freezes out Russia, Russians double-down on piracy-

Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has resulted in an exodus of foreign industries from the country, as Western nations unite in applying sanctions on the Putin regime. The games industry is one of the more prominent, with almost every major player now having withdrawn from Russia and closed any regional offices there. What’s an ordinary Russian to do when they can’t get their gaming fix? Pirate it, comrade.

This is an area where accurate figures are close to impossible, but it’s fair to say that Russia more generally has a reputation for software piracy, one established long before the current war in Ukraine. A new study by the Russian game development collective and college School XYZ suggests that it’s getting worse as companies withdraw from the market, with seven out…
